AWWA Webcast: Advances in UF/MF Membranes – Ceramic and Nano-fiber

Date: Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Time: 1:00 – 2:30 pm

Location: GB217

***************

Membrane water treatment technology is constantly improving. The development of new membrane systems for customized applications is expanding the options to meet specialized needs. This webcast presents the results of comparison studies that assess the performance of ceramic and nano-fiber membranes. Pilot studies and cost analyses demonstrate the factors that influence decisions regarding the selection of ceramic or polymeric MF/UF membranes. Also, electro-spun nano-fiber membranes (ENMs) and their applications in water treatment will be introduced.

 Learning Objectives

  • Compare the operational performance of ceramic vs. polymeric membranes.
  • Discuss innovative applications of ceramic and polymeric membranes within existing water treatment plants.
  • Identify cost-competitive situations between ceramic membranes and polymeric membranes.
  • Introduce the enhanced characteristics of electro-spun nano-fiber membranes.

AWWA Webcast: Biofiltration – A Low Cost Solution to High-Quality Water

Date: Wednesday, November 02, 2011

Time: 1:00 – 2:30 pm

Location: GB217

***************

Virtually all treatment plants that do not disinfect prior to filtration are employing biofiltration.  Optimizing this process can give enhanced treatment results.  This webcast describes methods to take advantage of biofiltration to improve water quality and reduce treatment costs.  Examples of treatment plants employing biofiltration illustrate the benefits from this effective treatment process.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the characteristics of biofiltration and the factors that influence process performance.
  • Identify specific methods that can enhance hydraulics and contaminant removal.
  • Discuss the operation of a membrane softening process that is coupled with biofiltration to gain the advantages of both

AWWA Webcast: A Drought is Coming. Plan for It Now!

Date: September 21, 2011

Time: 1:00 – 2:30 pm

Location: GB217

*************

Water systems are not immune from the effects of periodic drought conditions. Either short- or long-term water shortages can be mitigated by proper planning.

This webcast describes how water utilities can effectively respond to drought conditions. Presenters discuss the main elements of a successful drought management plan. Several examples of the effective execution of utility drought response plans are also presented.

Learning Objectives

  • Design drought responses that work and avoid commonly experienced pitfalls!
  • Formulate drought response plans that integrate into utility operations seamlessly.
  • Develop drought rates that encourage conservation without added expense to the utility.

AWWA Webcast: UV Disinfection: Fundamentals, Regulations & Applications

Date: March 23, 2011

Time: 1 – 2:30 pm

Location: i2C Room (2nd Floor, Galbraith Building)

*******************

The use of ultraviolet (UV) to treat drinking water has become more prevalent since it was found to be effective to inactivate Cryptosporidium.   Although UV is a proven technology, there are some myths surrounding its use. This webcast provides basic information about UV and how it disinfects drinking water.  The regulations regarding the application of UV are examined to clarify CT calculations (C is the disinfectant concentration and T is the contact time) and Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR) disinfection credits.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the mechanisms and processes of UV disinfection.
  • Identify the factors that affect compliance with disinfection regulations.
  • Demonstrate some methods of optimising UV system operation and maintenance.
