AWWA Webcast: UV Disinfection: Fundamentals, Regulations & Applications

Date: March 23, 2011

Time: 1 – 2:30 pm

Location: i2C Room (2nd Floor, Galbraith Building)

*******************

The use of ultraviolet (UV) to treat drinking water has become more prevalent since it was found to be effective to inactivate Cryptosporidium.   Although UV is a proven technology, there are some myths surrounding its use. This webcast provides basic information about UV and how it disinfects drinking water.  The regulations regarding the application of UV are examined to clarify CT calculations (C is the disinfectant concentration and T is the contact time) and Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR) disinfection credits.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the mechanisms and processes of UV disinfection.
  • Identify the factors that affect compliance with disinfection regulations.
  • Demonstrate some methods of optimising UV system operation and maintenance.

AWWA Webcast: DBP Compliance Approaches

Date: March 09, 2011

Time: 1 – 2:30 pm

Location: i2C Room (2nd Floor, Galbraith Building)

Water utilities are faced with ongoing challenges in the effort to continuously comply with Disinfection By-Products (DBP) regulations. The Stage 2 DBP Rule requires control of disinfection by-products while the Long-Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule may require elevated disinfection requirements. There are several strategies that can be used to achieve the necessary DBP control: precursor removal, alternative disinfectants, and DBP removal. This webcast explores some compliance approaches for these strategies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review DBP control strategies
  • Examine the effect of changing source water quality or alternative source waters on compliance at plants using enhanced coagulation and alternative disinfectants.
  • Assess conditions where aeration may be suitable for trihalomethane (THM) control.
